Three habits, each defensible on its own: an eating window, a training plan, a deadline-driven week. Each is a deliberate stressor, and each has its own recovery bill — but the body does not run three ledgers. Stacked on the same day, stressors don't add; they multiply. The hormesis paradox established the rule: every stressor bills a recovery account, and adaptation pays out only when the account covers it. Stacking follows as arithmetic. The sympathetic nervous system does not allocate one account to the fast, one to the workout, and one to the client meeting — it receives a single demand signal, and the cortisol system sums it. What makes stacking worse than addition is the interaction: a fasted workout is harder than the same workout fed, a workout under deadline pressure feels harder still, and all three conspire against the one recovery mechanism that could repair the damage — sleep. Notice what the chart does not say: the single stressors are fine. A calm day's intervals are the medicine the zone 2 topic prescribes, and a deadline week is survivable. The problem is the intersection — and the intersection is where driven people live.

Two of the four rows are "space it," not "stop it": saunas and coffee are fine tools at the right distance from sleep and from hard training. The other two rows are structural — a fasted, deficit-fueled session and a deadline-week training block both need rearranging, not fine-tuning.
The Fasted-Training Question
Fasted exercise has a real mechanism: training with low glycogen and low insulin nudges the muscle toward oxidizing fat, and the hormetic pillar frames the fast itself as a dose of metabolic stress. The honest synthesis of the human trials, though, is less exciting than the mechanism. A 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis found no reliable advantage for fasted versus fed exercise on body composition — and some evidence that fed training supports higher performance during the session (Aird et al., Scand J Med Sci Sports, 2018). The practical translation: if you train fasted, you are choosing a slightly harder stress dose for reasons other than fat loss — scheduling, preference, or a metabolic experiment — and the bill for that extra dose lands on the same recovery account as everything else. The fasting protocol makes the same point from the eating-window side: the fast is a tool, not a free lunch.
The Deadline Multiplier
Psychological stress is not a metaphor layered on top of physiological stress; it is the same system. The classic demonstration is the common cold: in a landmark study, higher psychological stress was associated with higher infection rates when volunteers were exposed to cold viruses, in a graded, dose-response fashion (Cohen et al., NEJM, 1991). The deadline multiplier works through three concrete channels, and none of them are imaginary:

The Energy-Availability Floor
Below every stress-stacking conversation sits a floor with a formal name: relative energy deficiency in sport, or RED-S. Energy availability is what remains of your intake after exercise is subtracted, expressed per kilogram of fat-free mass — and when it stays low, the body quietly defunds systems it considers optional: reproductive hormones, bone turnover, sometimes immunity. The International Olympic Committee's 2014 consensus statement consolidated the evidence under the RED-S umbrella (Mountjoy et al., Br J Sports Med, 2014), building on threshold work showing hormonal disruption appearing once energy availability drops below roughly 30 kilocalories per kilogram of fat-free mass per day (Loucks & Thuma, JCEM, 2003). Fasted training plus a training block plus a deadline week is, mechanistically, a low-energy-availability generator — not because anyone chose it, but because each element cuts intake, raises expenditure, or both.
⚠️ RED-S is clinician territory
The early warning signs are easy to misread as discipline: feeling cold at normal room temperature, sessions that feel flat for weeks, sleep that doesn't refresh, recurrent minor injuries. In women, missed or irregular periods are a red flag that belongs in a medical conversation, not a habit spreadsheet; in men, RED-S presents through low energy, libido changes, and stress injuries — the old "female athlete triad" framing hid half the population. - 🍽️ Feed the hard days. The training session closest to a deadline should be the fed one. Fasted training is a choice you get to make when the rest of the day is quiet.
- 🛏️ Sleep is the non-cancellable meeting. In a stacking week, protect bedtime before you protect the workout — cutting the recovery budget to fit the stress schedule is how debts compound.
- 🌡️ Skip the bonus stressors. Deadline week is the wrong week for the extra cold plunge or the longer fast. The hormetic add-ons are exactly what "stacking" means.
