The Ranking Methodology: How the Tiers Were Assigned

A ranking is only as honest as the method behind it. This page opens the hood on the evidence-ranked list: the five criteria every food was scored against, the three tiers those scores produced, and the judgment calls we made when the data were thin — which they often are. If you read one page before trusting the list, read this one.

Why Rank at All

"Superfood" lists are usually assertions dressed as journalism: a berry here, a powder there, no explanation of how the ranking was decided, and no way to argue with it. The parent page replaced that genre with an evidence-ranked list, and a ranking without a visible method is just another assertion. So before the foods appear, the method does. Everything below is ordinary scientific-epistemology practice — the same logic a systematic review uses when it grades studies — applied to a grocery list rather than a drug.

The Five Criteria

Every candidate food was scored on five dimensions, in descending order of weight. A food can fail one criterion and still rank well; it cannot rank highly on marketing alone, because marketing is not a criterion.

Two honest notes on the boundaries. First, tiers grade the evidence base behind a food category, not each individual food; within a tier, some foods sit higher than others (yogurt leads T2, for example). Second, the parent page's badges rate individual foods, so the two systems agree on direction while differing in granularity — a tier is a coarse verdict, a badge a fine one.

The asymmetry is the whole story. The T1 food is supported by several independent meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials; the T3 foods typically have no meaningful human trial record at all, which is exactly why the last page in this series treats them as a marketing phenomenon rather than a nutrition one. One caution against overreading the chart: bar length is weight of evidence, not worth of the food. A short bar does not make a food unhealthy — it makes its claims unsupported, which is a different verdict and a milder one.

A second caution: the tiers describe where the evidence sits today. Nutrition research moves slowly but it does move, and a food can climb or fall as trials accumulate. The tier system is built to make that movement visible rather than embarrassing — a re-ranking is a feature of an honest list, not a bug.

Judgment Calls We Made

Rubrics handle the easy cases. The hard ones required decisions, and a transparent method means naming them:

The list is not a shopping list to the exclusion of everything else, not a promise about your individual response, and not a clinical tool — it prescribes nothing. Tiers are defaults for people who want the best evidence-per-grocery-dollar; the underlying strategy the whole list serves — feeding a diverse microbiome, mostly with fiber and ferments — matters more than any single placement. And "Weak" means the case is weak, not that the food is harmful: most T3 foods are fine to eat; they are simply not worth organizing a diet around.

Using the List Without Becoming a Pedant

The ranking is a triage tool, not a religion. In practice it collapses to three moves: make beans a staple, keep live-culture ferments in the rotation, and let garlic and onions do their quiet work in the pan. When a new "superfood" arrives in your feed, run it through the same five criteria in ten seconds — human trials? mechanism? consistency? dose? tolerance? — and most of them answer themselves.
