The solid parts: bacteria produce neuroactive molecules, the vagus nerve carries gut signals north (the gut-brain axis topic's evidence), and germ-free mice show altered behavior that normalizes when microbes are added. The hype parts: the leap from "gut bacteria influence mouse behavior" to "your anxiety is a microbiome problem" outruns the human evidence. The honest position: the gut-brain connection is real, bidirectional, and promising — and not yet the master key the industry sells.
🧪 The testing caveat
Commercial "microbiome tests" will sequence your gut and sell you a personalized plan. The honest problem: the science can describe your microbiome, but it cannot yet reliably prescribe from it — "optimal" compositions vary by person, and no trial has shown that test-guided interventions improve health outcomes. Sequence your gut out of curiosity, not as medicine. The actionable core — fiber, ferments, sleep, exercise — is free and doesn't need the data.
