The Three Phases, Defined

The most common failure is running a cut like a bulk in reverse — doubling the deficit to go faster, dropping protein, and skipping the gym because energy is low. That converts a fat-loss phase into a muscle-loss phase, and muscle is the tissue this entire topic exists to protect.

After 40, the Rules Change

The Recomp Sweet Spot

The oldest myth in fitness is that you must pick one — lose fat or gain muscle, never both. The evidence says the answer depends on who you are. Reviews of the recomposition literature find simultaneous fat loss and muscle gain is common in people who are untrained, carrying higher body fat, or far from their genetic ceiling — and rare in lean, well-trained athletes, where the two goals genuinely compete (Barakat et al., Strength Cond J, 2020). The mechanism is intuitive: a body with ample fat stores and unbuilt muscle reads a training stimulus as "build," even in a mild deficit, because the deficit is funded from fat.
