The Consensus Numbers

The safety ceiling is one of the few areas where the major authorities agree. The European Food Safety Authority's comprehensive 2015 assessment concluded that up to 400 mg of caffeine per day — roughly 200 mg per single dose — poses no safety concern for healthy adults (EFSA, 2015). The US Food and Drug Administration publishes the same 400 mg figure. Two carve-outs matter: pregnancy, where 200 mg per day is the standard guidance (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists), and children, for whom the advice is effectively "little to none." Note what the ceiling is not: it is not a recommendation to consume 400 mg, and it is not a performance target. The Half-Life Layer

Why does the total matter when each dose is small? Because caffeine clears slowly. With a half-life averaging 5–6 hours — and ranging from under 2 hours in fast metabolizers to over 9 in slow ones — caffeine taken at noon is half gone by early evening and still present at bedtime. A 200 mg lunchtime dose leaves roughly 50 mg circulating eight hours later, enough to fragment deep sleep in sensitive people.
